:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from AHK -- Edition lacks Scott's end notes : I read Ivanhoe and Waverly about 20 years ago and wish that I could find my Penguin editions now: this edition would seem to lack the many (many and detailed!) end notes (which, as I recall, Scott included with the work). Without same end notes, I believe this work lacks the appropriate (prescribed!) historical context and is uninterpretable. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2017 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Diana S. Long -- This was a challenge read for me but well worth ... : This was a challenge read for me but well worth the extra time spent on it. The author has command of the English language and is quite the loquacious writer. I felt it was not a simple story with a hero, but a time in history which incorporates the different peoples of England with church, nobles and the peasantry. The author has been fastidious in his research for the time period in which the story takes place and in the end of the book has listed notes of his historic information and footnotes. This is a story of Chivalry so it includes Knights, battles and historic characters as well as the famous legendary Robin Hood. I also found some humor along the way. The author also has many phrases in Latin and French and I really learned some history in the process of reading. I was highly entertained. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016 )

And in any case, Sir Walter Scott will not be harmed by my one star. The ONE STAR is for this unfortunate edition. First, it's on 8.5 x 11'' paper making this book enormous and ridiculously heavy. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Grunt -- Never old : A true classic, written in the early 1800's, but relevant as long as men wish good to triumph over evil. Scott's style takes breaking into, as it should considering the language's evolution over the last 200 years. But once you have, it's as rich a tapestry of medieval life as one can find anywhere. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Emily Dybdahl -- Adventure, history, and romance : Such a long, in-depth novel, incorporating history, wars, and adventure, Ivanhoe was an experience similar to reading Alexandre Dumas. The characters are heroic or villainous, there are lengthy lyrical threats and clashes of the sword, and there are fierce young damsels in distress. I can see how Scott was so popular in his day. I enjoyed reading this book, but if I didn't have TV and other distractions, like his audience back in his time, I would definitely immerse myself in his entire series of 600 page tales. This is much more interesting and Scott enters enthusiastically into the period, even if some of it is anachronistic (the keep of Conisborough castle is not earlier Saxon, it is contemporaneous with the rest of the Norman castle and is, in fact, something of a peak in sophistication (now ruined by English Heritage tastelessness). His love of strange and archaic language is evident, as in the Waverley novels, and I enjoyed reading this very much - but you do need a measure of patience to read Scott! So for example in the very first para of the actual story, the original text has "..... there extended in ancient times a large forest, covering the greater part of the beautiful hills and valleys which lie between Sheffield and the pleasant town of Doncaster". However in this version, it is presented as ".... there extended in ancient instances a large forest, masking the extra a part of the stunning hills and valleys which lie among Sheffield and the great city of Doncaster" (note I have not made any typing mistakes here!). Now, it's a novel from the 1820s, which makes the English more challenging in any case, but at least it flows. This version is simply bewildering! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from John Hopper -- Good stuff, if a little heavy at times : This classic historical romance (pretty much the inspiration for the whole genre of medieval historical fiction) is extremely well written and, from a linguistic point of view, an excellent example of the complex sentence structure often used in 19th century novels and not often today, demanding much of the reader; it is as a consequence, a challenge to read, and it took me a fortnight to get through, though this edition was only some 350 pages, and it did get a bit dull and somewhat confusing in places. Ivanhoe himself is actually a fairly minor character throughout most of the novel, and is overshadowed by a number of other characters. For much of it, the novel is actually about oppression - the oppression suffered by the Jewish characters, Isaac of York and his daughter Rebecca at the hands and tongues of Norman and Saxon alike (though the author clearly disapproves of this anti-Semitism, an opposition which is a refreshing attitude for an author of this period, it does get quite dispiriting to read when this prejudice is displayed even by characters with whom the reader is supposed to sympathise); and the oppression suffered by Saxons at the hands of their Norman conquerors (though, given that the events take place some 130 years after the Norman Conquest, the starkness of this conflict was much less clear in reality than depicted in the novel). The novel is also famous, of course, for popularising the legend of Robin Hood and coining the epithet, Robin of Locksley. Good stuff, though it drags in places. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ase Johannessen -- and the cruel way the Jews and the poor were treated : I've read this book before,and also watched the television series many years ago. I always picture Elizabeth Taylor when I read about Rebecca the Jewess, and Roger Moore as Ivanhoe (was a bit surprised to find that in the book he's blond). The oldfashioned language made it a bit slow in the beginning, but I got into it. you canread it on the line of an adventure story or you can go deeper and see the conflicts between Sxons and Normans after the invation and in many years to come, and the cruel way the Jews and the poor were treated, and the bigotry of the upper classes, going to the Jews for money while treating them like dirt. There are several layers. It's a popular classic and I recommend it, it's relevant even though it's a long time since it was written. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2014 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from iandliz -- Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott : I was somewhat daunted by the prospect of reading Ivanhoe and, when I found it at the top of my reading list, I wondered whether to skip it. When I think of Sir Walter Scott I think of warriors in the highlands of Scotland - I must be thinking of Rob Roy - and I assumed Ivanhoe would be in a similar vein. But it isn't. Instead it is set in medieval England, Ashby-de-la-Zouche, Adrian Mole country, during the reign of Richard the Lionheart. Think Robin Hood, knights in shining armour, damsels in distress, jousting, jesters and bad Prince John. Indeed, Robin Hood and his merry men feature strongly in the novel as do Richard and John. The historical setting is fascinating. Set in the 12th century, it is a time when Saxons are not yet reconciled to the Norman invasion and the two sides are deeply suspicious of one another. It is a very unstable time with King Richard away fighting the Crusades in the Middle East and Prince John plotting his own route to the crown. The treatment of Jews features strongly in the novel. The Jewish race is treated with hatred and disgust, partly due to their prosperity through money-lending practices. It reminds us of far more recent history and how heavily Jews have suffered for their beliefs over the centuries. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2012 )
